1. When do you need to be focused?

Usually I need to concentrate and be focused when I am doing homework. Somepeople can study when there is a lot of noise around them, but I can’t, I haveto be in complete silence. I must be in a place where there is no music, nohousehold noise, no people talking… total silence. Maybe I am not good atconcentrating and I get distracted too easily… but that’s just the way I am.It’s my personality.

2. What may distract you when you are trying to stay focused?

When I am trying to stay focused I can get easily distracted by manythings. Firstly, my own thoughts start to wander off, and I suddenly realise Iam staring out of the window thinking about something completely different andnot focusing on my studies. Sometimes if I hear music or my parents or friendstalking outside the room I start to lose my concentration. Things like that.

3. What do you do to help you concentrate?

I put on noise-cancelling headphones - you know, those kind of headphonesthat play music but do not allow other external sounds to enter your ears! I puton light classical music, and I make sure I shut the door and I tell my friendsand family that I need to study in peace.

4. Is it difficult for you to stay focused on something?

Yes, I’ve got a poor concentration span. Well, a lot of the time, anyway.There are times when I can focus really well - when I’ve had a good night’ssleep, or when I am feeling calm and confident. But if I am stressed or nervous,I find it hard to concentrate on things and I am easily distracted.

The person I’d like to describe who is full of energy is my friend, Mary.She’s incredible, actually. I honestly don’t know how she has so much energy andmanages to do so much with her energy too, and not waste it. As one example, shealways gets up early, goes for a run for an hour, comes home and showers, getschanged, and then has breakfast and then starts to study. After that she alwaysreads, cooks wonderful food, goes out to parties and a lot of social events inthe evenings, and seems to have some time to do all sorts of little hobbies inthe meantime. I have often wondered how she can remain so focused, so active andmanage to fit so many things into one day. I think she must be very healthy,have strong genes, and also perhaps a great sense of confidence, positivity andmotivation, too. I feel great when I am with Mary, because she is alwaysencouraging me to join in new experiences and learn new things, but at the sametime I feel quite tired in her company. She never seems to get tired or run outof energy and she’s always talking. She’s so talkative. I think some peoplenaturally have a thirst for experiences and a strong appetite for life, and Maryis most certainly one of those people. I feel energized, myself, when I’m in hercompany, but also she makes me feel that I am a bit lazy, a bit laid-back andperhaps don’t have much get-up-and-go compared to her, so at times I feel a bitinferior, like something is wrong with me. In a way I’d like to be like Mary,but in a way I also don’t think I could cope with having such a busy life andmaintaining such positivity whilst juggling so many different hobbies,activities, studies and social engagements. I’m the type of person that needsmore free time alone relaxing and just not thinking that much, or doing so muchin my free time. I guess we are all different! But at times these kinds ofenergetic and active people can be a motivating influence to us all!

1. What kind of jobs require much energy?

Lots of jobs require a lot of energy, in different ways. For example,manual jobs require a lot of physical energy, stamina and endurance, whilstmental jobs like being a lawyer, a CEO or a CFO, require a different kind ofenergy – you need to have a sharp and fast-thinking mind. So, there aredifferent types of energy required for different kinds of jobs and they are alltiring in their own different ways. Sometimes, for example, doing some physicalmanual work can be tiring on the body, but oddly relaxing on the mind. And theopposite is true of a lot of mentally-tiring jobs, you get exhausted fromthinking so much and thinking of so many things at the same time, but your bodydoesn’t get enough exercise. There are pros and cons of all jobs really.

2. Do you think manual work will all be done by machines in the future?

I think most manual work will be done by machines in the future, but thisalso has some significant downsides. This has been discussed a lot recently asso much factory work, as an example, is done by machines, robots, basically, andthis has resulted in less and less jobs being available to lower-skilled workerswho rely on such manual jobs as their main source of income. So, I would notreally like to see so many manual jobs being taken over by robots, because thismeans a lot of people will lose their jobs, and if they don’t have other skills,they may find it incredibly difficult to find work. These are some of the keyissues that arise from modernization – issues that governments all over theworld are needing to address today, as automation in the workforce is becomingso predominant.

3. Do you think manual workers will earn more in the future?

I am not sure. I don’t really understand that much about economics and theworkforce really, but I’d guess that they will because the more scarce a job is,usually the better paid it becomes. So, say, for example, certain types offactory jobs, perhaps more skilled manual labour, become more scarce, then thosethat can do those jobs might end up getting paid more. I’m not entirely sure ifit works like this, so it’s really hard for me to say. My friend, who studies,economics, is really into this topic, actually. He has studied a lot about GDP,and wage gaps, and pay rates and things like this because he aims to be anemployment lawyer in the future as well as an economist. I often listen to himtalking about these topics, but then I get lost because it’s such a complexthing, and there are so manty factors involved in the economy and workforce of acountry, that I don’t have enough knowledge of the subject area to understand itproperly.
